BIO:
One look into his eyes will tell you that Buddy is a loving and gentle little man whose greatest joy is to snuggle next to his person, snooze in the sun and even destuff a few toys! Buddy came from a local breeder here in SC who was moving and couldn't take him with her. Buddy was treated as a personal pet at this home so he has a great personality. He loves meeting new people ... all he wants is to give kisses and be held. When people come over our house, he doesn't bark once and he goes up to everyone to make sure he gets a few belly rubs!
Buddy is 7 years old but if I had to guess, I would have said much younger. He is in great physical shape and has no problem sprinting around the yard with all of the other younger dogs. Sometimes when he runs, he gets so excited that he lets out little yips that let the others know he is fast on their heals! He is very alert and smart little guy.
He does well in his crate but we don't even need to leave him one when we go to work. He just snoozes either in his bed or on the couch until we get home. He shouldn't be left alone for long periods of time, especially if he is the only dog, as I think he would get very lonely. He loves to be by his person. He is potty trained and does very well with going to the door when he has to go. He did mark a few times when he first came to his foster home but we let him know that wasn't acceptable and he now does much better.
Buddy gets along great with the other dogs in the house (a male dachshund, a male mix puppy and female adult mix about 40 pounds). I also think he would do well as an only dog. He is very happy go lucky; however, I would not recommend him go to a home with an overly dominant male as he would stand up to the challenge. He gets grumpy if another dog tries to steal his food so we always feed him in his crate separately until he is all done. For this reason, we recommend he goes to a home with children over the age of 8 and are familiar with how to be gentle with dachshunds and their long backs!
Buddy walks well on a leash, does well with strangers, rides well in the car, looks great and has as winning personality that will quickly make you fall in love. Buddy loves our fenced in yard and loves to have other dogs as companions but it is not a must. I think he would be ok as an only dog provided that he is not left alone for long periods of time (i.e. more than 4 - 5 hours). He has spent his entire life with other dachshunds and I think he would get lonley quickly if his person wasn't nearby often. I do think he would be happiest with a dachshund-saavy owner who is familiar with the breed. If you are looking for a friendly and loyal friend who will love you furever, Buddy is the boy for you!!
