BIO:
Gus is a wonderful boy who came to us from a high-kill shelter in the South; he has been through quite a bit in his life. However, with his gentle demeanor you would never know it. Gus loves to snuggle and wants to be near you and follow you from room to room to keep you company. He is happiest when he is beside you with your arm around him or tucked in under a blanket. He gives soft, gentle kisses that sometimes bring tears to my eyes because he looks adoringly into my eyes with such trust. Gus would do best in a home with people around during the day; a retired home would be perfect. He is not terribly active and being that he is a senior, he prefers a low activity household. He has a little bit of separation anxiety, but is not destructive and settles down quickly. With so many recent changes it is understandable, but with time and a constant routine and lots of love, he will be just fine.
Gus enjoys walks and has one of the most beautiful gaits when he hits his stride. He walks beside you and doesn’t pull at all; however, does have a strong prey drive so you need to make sure you have a good hold on the leash in case he sees a squirrel that needs chasing. I’ve found with his medical condition (discussed below) short walks are best in moderate temperatures. The extreme heat can be too much for him to handle.
He has come to us with a minor medical issue and that is why he is considered “special needs.” Gus has a minor case of epilepsy and is on a daily low dose of Phenobarbital. This is not uncommon in the dachshund breed.
This little guy is just a big love. I am hoping the right family sees past his medical issue and decides to give him the wonderful forever home he deserves. He would make an outstanding companion for someone who wants company of an adoring fan. If you think you are that family, please fill out an application for Gus…he’s waiting to go home.
