Katie - GA
Katie found her Furever home with Nadine, her foster mom! Almost eight months ago I decided to become a foster mom! I read a story online about a dachshund that had been abused, turned in to a shelter, rescued by a dachshund rescue, nursed back to health in a foster home and eventually adopted by a wonderful couple. I figured this was something that I could do to help. However, I was “doomed” from the start. I saw a picture of this tiny dog cowering in the back of this enormous cement cage at a kill shelter and she was marked urgent. I had to save her! I convinced Deeann (FDR intake coordinator) that I should go and get her and take her into foster even though she didn’t really look like a dachshund (the shelter said she was but turns out she is a chiweenie). When we first got Katie she was skinny and scared of everyone but especially of men. She has come a long way since then and loves her foster dad tons now. She loves to curl up on a lap and sleep under the blankets on the big bed. She mostly gets along with her brother and sisters and loves to go in the crate with Rufus. Loves going for walks and going to the dog park. She is a sweet, cute little thing who has become my shadow and there was no way I was going to give her up. I really admire those who can foster because, obviously, not everyone can. I am glad that there are still many other ways that I can help FDR ....home visits, transportation, help with fund raisers. These are things that even a “FAILED FOSTER” can do :)

Chester - SC
Randy sent us an update on his new "son" Chester! Chester seems to be doing wonderful, especially when you consider he was in eight (8) homes in 2011. It's almost like he's wondering how long it will be until he's moved to his next house. But, so long as I'm here, he's a keeper. He's adjusting well. He and my Elly Grace are getting along and playing well and he seems to respect my old girl, Cheyenne. Chester came to be with me before Christmas and I had time off work and could stay home with him. I'd like to thank all the folks of FDR, especially Nadine Peacock, for the fast application process to ensure I'd have that time. It was very important to me not to get any new family member and then leave them when I go off to work. As Chester and I got to know one another, I noted immediately something about Chester was a different During my time off, we paid a visit to my vet for a meet and greet checkup. We also learned the dangers of being a double-dapple; much more prone to deafness and/or blindness and Chester may be blind in his right eye. He cloaks it very well, but with Chester being my 5th generation of Dachshunds, I knew. At the recommendation of my vet team, Chester and me have an appointment with a highly recommended canine ophthalmic specialist next Monday. Chester has some emotional issues (understandably) we are trying to understand and address. First, he has terrible separation anxiety when I leave to go to work and gets very upset. That is also a very good sign that he is bonding well with me and his new home. We are currently working on his near obsession with his toys. Likely a result of being moved so much, one of the few belongings that has remained with him on his journey in 2011 is his tractor tire that he chews - yes, a real tractor tire! :) But, even in three short weeks, he has made stellar progress. In all my years, oddly, Chester is my first boy. Never had a son before, but he has quickly become my buddy and Chester is definitely in his furever home. You folks can't have him back! :) I've attached a photo of him on the bed at the country place guarding his tire!

Shadow
Shadow had made himself right at home. Let's say he's the king of the house! Shadow is by far the perfect dog. He spends most of his time on our living room couch and soaking up the sunshine that shines into our living room every morning. However, he is not a big fan of the cold weather. We had to go out and buy him a sweater so that he would go out to use the bathroom. He has made very good friends with our parents' dogs. He definitely thinks he's bigger than he looks. He can not be away from us for a second. Shadow loves to follow us around the house and he's always afraid he is going to miss out on something. He's definitely does not like to get up in the morning, but who does? He spends most of the night in his bed, however, he likes to join my wife and I in our bed around early morning. We couldn't have asked for a better dog. I have included a photo of shadow being the King of the house, in his favorite night time spot. ~ Mike and Lindsay

Piper 2
Ellie is so sweet and full of personality. She has adapted into our family very well and our 4 year old Dachshund Cooper absolutely loves having a play mate around. They love going on walks and playing outside, especially at the beach. Ellie is such a smart girl, she will not only let you know what she wants and when but she has also learned to sit, stay and shake! Her favorite hobby is chasing and barking at squirrels! We traveled up to Northern Maine for the Christmas Holidays and she was such a trooper during the long car ride. She loved being around all of our family and playing outside in the snow. She has brought so much joy to our little family, thank you Furever Dachshund Rescue!

Rosie - SC
We adopted Rosie thru Furever Dachshund Rescue on August 20, 2011. We had worked with Dee Ann for several months trying to find a good fit for our home. We have two cats and we needed a dog that would be tolerant of our cats. Dee Ann was great about trying to find us the right dog. Not the "perfect" dog, because there is no such thing (even though Rosie is pretty darn close) . Rosie was 12-14 weeks old when we got her. A elderly gentleman had purchased her from a breeder when she was about six weeks old. Shortly after, he passed away and his family took Rosie. They did not want a dog inside so she was put outside all the time. Fortunately someone told them about Furever Rescue and they surrendered Rosie. She stayed with her foster mom for about 3 weeks before we adopted her. Her foster mom was SO helpful with potty training and obedience training as well as answering all of my questions and concerns. I cannot recommend Furever Dachshund Rescue enough!! We cannot imagine what we did before Rosie. She is the center of our house. My husband and I spoil her rotten. As bad as it may be, Miss Rosie sleeps with us each night. She loves to play and has so many toys. She has done wonderful with potty training. We take her outside on a regular basis but it has been well over (3) months since she has had an accident in the house. She is very smart and very well behaved. Rosie has found a family that loves her dearly and she loves us. She confirms that by those sweet, sloppy kisses she gives and we just welcome them and pray that we have many, many years of her sweet kisses.
